The 6Summits Rwenzori Community Foundation recognizes that the health of the Rwenzori Mountains is inseparable from the health and prosperity of the communities that surround it. We are strictly committed to minimizing environmental harm and actively promoting responsible, restorative environmental practices throughout all of our programs, administrative activities, and community partnerships.

2. Waste & Resource Management

We believe that conservation begins at home. In all Foundation operations, offices, and field projects, we mandate the reduction of unnecessary waste. Our approach includes:

• Minimizing the use of single-use plastics in all community events and training sessions.
• Encouraging sustainable resource use and the responsible sourcing of local materials for project implementation.
• Implementing proper waste disposal and recycling protocols within our partner communities.

3. Responsible Tourism & Visitor Behavior

The Rwenzori Mountains attract visitors from all over the globe. While tourism is vital for local livelihoods, it must not come at the expense of the ecosystem. We actively promote and enforce responsible tourism models by:

• Educating visitors on “Leave No Trace” principles before they enter fragile mountain ecosystems.
• Ensuring that our community tourism programs operate with minimal ecological footprints.
• Training local guides to strictly enforce environmental guidelines with their clients.

4. Ecosystem Restoration

Our policy extends beyond simply “doing no harm”—we are actively committed to healing the landscape. We require that our agricultural and livelihood programs directly support ecological restoration. This includes establishing indigenous tree nurseries and prohibiting agricultural encroachment into protected park boundaries.

5. Protecting Water Sources

The Rwenzori Mountains serve as a critical water catchment area for western Uganda. Protecting these water sources is a fundamental pillar of our environmental policy. We work to stabilize riverbanks, prevent agricultural runoff from contaminating streams, and educate communities on the vital importance of maintaining clean, unpolluted waterways.

6. Environmental Education

Policy is only effective if it is understood. We are committed to embedding environmental awareness into every community interaction. We continuously promote environmental education through school clubs, farmer training workshops, and youth mentorship, ensuring that the next generation possesses the knowledge required to protect their natural heritage.
